IRC Celebrates a Successful DACA Renewal Clinic in Compton Despite ICE Escalation

Last week, the IRC partnered with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) to provide free DACA renewal legal assistance, completing 33 cases in one day. Additionally, CHIRLA covered the $605 government filing fee for each client totaling nearly $20,000. Despite concern that attendance would be low due to aggressive ICE activity and escalated emotions, we were proved wrong. The room was full and we were able to provide services, safety and confidentiality for every participant.

As an intern at the IRC, it was a privilege to participate and assist at the DACA clinic. For me, it was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when compassion, dedication, and community come together. From the moment the doors opened at 8:00 a.m., the building was alive with energy—volunteers, staffers, and legal advocates all working in harmony with one shared goal: to support and empower DACA recipients. Over the course of the day, the IRC legal team and CHIRLA attorneys provide practical legal assistance and support to 33 individuals, successfully completing and submitting their DACA renewal applications. Each case was approached with care, urgency, and respect, as our case workers and legal team poured their time and expertise into ensuring every detail was right.

There was a sense of unity and purpose throughout the clinic, with every person playing a critical role in creating a welcoming and efficient space. We were more than just a team—we were a well-oiled machine powered by hope. By the end of the day, we were physically exhausted but emotionally full, knowing we had made a real difference in the lives of people who deserve stability and opportunity. It was an inspiring and deeply fulfilling experience.

Now in its 13th year,  there are over 165,000 active DACA recipients in California. DACA recipients come from over 200 countries around the world. They now range in age from early 20s to early 40s.

Thank you to CHIRLA, Peace Over Violence and LA Legal Aid Foundation for their partnership on this clinic.
